LOCATIONS

773 santa fe street mural
denver, COLORADO

While I figure out additional locations for Rooted in RED commurals and for my own muzzinabikons, I decided to paint one in my studio!  I have mural fever!  This mural has designed in more of my pattern work.  I enjoy using the symbol in a repetitive fashion, the negative space is just as fun as the symbol itself to create. I am starting a Rooted in RED workshop starting in November, and this is a great addition to the portfolio of murals for the project.

xavier/harvard street mural
denver, COLORADO

Xavier/Harvard Street mural was a  brilliant idea of my friend, Christy.  Celebrating her new home, we were discussing Rooted in RED, and she perked up with "I have a wall for you!"  The rest was history!  I learned a lot by painting this mural.  The community naturally wants to be apart of things in their environment.  I had neighbors for blocks come and visit and chat about the design, the meaning and what it did for the neighborhood.  We did have a scare with the graffiti police, but everything was sorted out in the end. Lesson learned.

Muzzinabikon
tempelhof park, Berlin GERMANY

Tempelhof park, a former U.S. airbase in the past decade was voted to be turned into a public park  after the airbase was closed.  In the middle of the park is an abandoned airplane, and next to it a log.  Many people pass through, it's one of the only areas with a large amount of trees.

Muzzinabikon
eastside gallery, Berlin GERMANY

eastside gallery was a special place for me.  I am not sure if it was a great night with fellow MFA's the summer before contemplating the worlds problems next to the river and under the stars, or if its because Eastside gallery is the worlds largest open air gallery.  I felt a connection to the site that made it seem like it gave the symbol truth and power.

Muzzinabikon
mauerpark, Berlin GERMANY

As a site that once was used as a viewing area from East Berlin to West Berlin, the wall is now a popular graffiti site.   As I painted this muzzibinakon on the wall,  a couple walked by and questioned my technique, of using a paintbrush instead of using spray paint.

I mix the bear oil and raw red ochre pigment on site, which contributes an endearing ritual to the tradition of muzzibinakon. I am currently using a French Luberon red ochre.
